The Neighborhood: Afraid

Although "Sweater Weather" it is a fantastic piece of music and one of my personal favorites, this song is probably the only reason you know who The Neighbourhood is.

If you've never listened to anything else by The Neighbourhood besides this mellow, California-beach-and-cardigan-inspired track, you're majorly missing out.

Full disclosure: until yesterday night, I was missing out.

I left the house for a couple hours, leaving my roommate sprawled on the couch in our bedroom and fixated on her laptop, on which she was streaming video after video of The Neighbourhood's various concert performances... And I came back several hours later to find her in exactly the same spot, doing the exact same thing.

So naturally, I joined in.

Fun fact: Neighbourhood's frontman Jesse Rutherford is only 22 years old and absolutely smokin' hot. I guarantee his mellow voice of silk and sexy will make you melt.

The band was formed in August 2011, originating in Norman, Oklahoma and later relocating to Newbury Park, California, and has five members.

The Neighborhood played at Coachella 2013, just a year and a half after forming, and barely two years after Jesse and one of the band members had gone to Coachella the previous year and realized they wanted to be on stage themselves.

Their debut album, I Love You., was released this past April, and they have already experienced overwhelming success and rising popularity in the music industry and among young adults especially.

After to diving into the mellow and refreshingly honest world of music that The Neighbourhood exists in, I have discovered a new favorite track:

Entitled "Afraid," its sound may at first seem strangely familiar; that's because it uses the exact same chords as the renown "Sweater Weather," and has much of the same laid-back vibe.  However, upon further listening, "Afraid" establishes a darker mood than "Weather," due in part to the minor key of the song and the echoing techniques used in editing the track, but this haunting and anxious atmosphere is owed more to the lyrics of the song than anything.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrWwtU7iyl0 (Album Version, Explicit)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwZk3G-44kI (Live/Acoutic Version on KROQ)

Some of my favorite lines include
"All my friends always lie to me, I know they're thinking:
'You're too mean, I don't like you, f*ck you anyway; You make me want to scream at the top of my lungs.
It hurts but I won't fight you, you suck anyway, you make me wanna die."

The chorus consists of Rutherford singing:
"When I wake up, I'm afraid somebody else might take my place [...]
When I wake up, I'm afraid somebody else might end up being me"

The reason I feel such a connection to these words is because I feel that fear of losing our identity or not knowing who we are is something that happens frequently, and commonly, among high school and college age students.  It becomes to easy to get lost in the crowd when there are literally thousands of people surrounding you on a daily basis, and when you are far from the comfort of your childhood home and suddenly being thrown into and exposed to the world, completely on your own.

Everyone goes through issues with friends, or even just with people you are constantly surrounded by in whatever environment you find yourself.

The title of this track, however, is what speaks to me the most.  From personal observation and experience, I don't think anyone would disagree with me when I say that people in their early 20s, leaving the teenage years behind and beginning independent adult life, are most hesitant and reluctant to use the word "afraid" when describing how they feel.

The thought of being alone or unsure, or both, is a terrifying one.  Everyone feels it, at least sometimes, but no one ever wants to admit it; being afraid is synonymous with being weak.

Rutherford brings these unsure feelings and insecure thoughts to life in "Afraid," and I believe he does a remarkable job of creating a musical expression of the thoughts and emotions that people experience when they truly do feel insecure and afraid.

So.  Thank you, Jesse, for showing me that
1) tattoos all over a guy's body can actually be extremely sexy,
2) The Neighbourhood does not only sing about wearing sweaters because "it's too cold for you here," and
3) that real people, all people, feel afraid... And that there's nothing wrong with it.  You have inspired me.

Happy listening, friends! I hope you enjoy "Afraid" as much as I did, and don't forget to explore more of The Neighbourhood's stuff! They're super cool and definitely going places fast.

Cheers,

Wonderful Fling To Be Flung

Helloooo friends!

I hope everyone had a wonderful day off for Veterans Day, may we always remember those who have fought for the precious, beautiful freedom we often take for granted. <3

Also, Happy Founders Day to my lovely sorority, Gamma Phi Beta!!! 139 years old today, and we don't look a day over 50 ;) Love my sisters and so happy to share this special day with them all over the nation!

Today was an absolutely b-e-a-utiful day!... From what I saw of it through the tinted windows in the prison I call the library :( I've been here for 12 hours and still going strong! Curse Applied Argumentation and writing legal controversy speeches... Fascinating as hell, but let's be real, who has the time?! NOT me. No way.

Anyhoo, I am excited and proud to announce my re-discovered love -- nay, obsession -- with the ravishing Mr. Frank Sinatra.  What an absolute gem! There will never be another like him, and I don't know why he would ever cease to continue being appreciated and cherished by generations to come.

Courtesy of my lovely roommate Mary and her love for old-time jazz and timeless slow songs of the 20s and 30s, I have a new favorite song: "Come Dance With Me" by Sinatra himself.  What a truly wonderful and carefree tune, it makes me want nothing more than to be back in Sinatra's time: simple, beautiful, and happy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQaUyBBL_M8

This song provided me with something I found myself lacking lately: a smile :) So thank you, Frank, for eternally blessing the world with your exquisitely genuine music, and for knowing exactly how to spread happiness as well.  80 years later, and the world appreciates you more and more as time continues to pass.

Also, thank you to all my absolutely wonderful friends for always having my back and reminding me of how blessed I am; I forget that sometimes, and I know you will always be there to help me lift my chin back up and coax a smile on my face.  I truly am so beyond blessed in this life where I have so many things to be thankful for.  Really, "You Make Me Feel So Young."

So, even though it's rather late on this Monday night, I hope you find comfort and inspiration in Sintra's music, as I have.

Cheers!

In Between Dreams

Tomorrow, I leave for San Francisco.

So I can (attempt) to run the Nike Women's Half Marathon.

I wish I could be in this beautiful and artistic city much longer than a mere two days, but I can't wait all the same.

Thinking about going to San Fran, and the fact that it's finally here, has led me to start thinking more and more each day about studying abroad in the Fall of 2014.  More than anything, I want to study in London.

Something about that magnificent city with red leaves, rain-slicked pavements, a warm cup of joe, and people watching in a local pub just feel so necessary and right in my life right now, and I wonder if I can wait much longer to (hopefully) embark on that journey.

I'm feeling especially wistful and melancholy lately, though I'm not sure why.  I think I really just need to get away; perhaps this is why the thought of being in London, away from life as I know it, appeals to me so greatly at this time.  Who knows.

The song I choose to share with you today (or tomorrow, whenever you get a chance to take a look) is a classic, a bit dated but never out of style.  Do You Remember by Jack Johnson is nostalgic and loving, and it is without a doubt everything I want.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Y5kxOGhqrw

I just want a wonderful man to sing to me about our life together, is that too much to ask? Sigh.

RAIN

Finally, RAIN!!!!

My favorite kind of Fall weather finally stopped hiding from me.  I don't care what anyone says, there is absolutely nothing better than waking up to the smell of fresh rain on the pavement outside your window, and hearing the gentle trickle and pitter patter of drops hitting the roof above you.  It is nature's most beautiful music.

On days like these, I find that there are no better companions than a Pumpkin Spice Latte and Coldplay.  My favorite band never fails to provide me with cozy comfort and absolute serenity as the grey clouds let showers fall to the earth below.

So of course, being that Coldplay is, indeed, my most favorite band, I am obliged to share with you all their most recent release!

Entitled "Atlas," it is a brand new track to be featured on The Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack.  But regardless of the album it is being released on (sorry if you're not a Hunger Games fan), this track is exquisite and utterly beautiful.

It begins with enchantingly soft piano riffs, and Chris Martin's low and sultry voice sings to us in an entrancing, almost lullaby-like state.  The song picks up about halfway through, slowly building in the music until Martin breaks through and sings louder: "I'll carry your world."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lh3TokLzzmw

Really, a wonderful piece of music; Coldplay never seems to fail.

Maybe I'm biased.  I probably am. Maybe.

I just love them so much.

Anyway, I hope you give "Atlas" a listen, and I hope that if, like me, you are experiencing this wonderful first taste of Fall weather, you truly take it in and enjoy it.  I challenge you to find your place of serenity and contentment today.

Here's to a good second half of the week, cheers!

HAPPY OCTOBER!

HAPPY OCTOBER EVERYONE!!!

So stoked that one of my favorite months is finally here! Autumn is such a beautiful and captivating season, I feel like we take it for granted a lot.  Stop and look around once and a while once the leaves begin to turn and the air becomes a bit crisper; our world is so completely stunning and we are so blessed to live in such a wonderful world.  SLO especially captures my heart during this season.

I have SO much to celebrate tonight!!! I had the honor of welcoming 72 new sisters to my sorority, Gamma Phi Beta, and I honestly could not be more excited to see what these talented gems will accomplish as they begin their journey as crescent moons.  It's so hard to believe that I was in their position a whole year ago!

ALSO.  New Two Door Cinema Club EP is out today! I've probably mentioned it a gazillion times, but I'm seeing them in concert in Oakland on the 22nd of this month with my friend Joey, and I literally cannot wait! Their new stuff seems to be going in a slightly different direction than they have done in the past, but it's definitely a good change.  Nothing to complain about here.  My favorite, besides "Changing Of The Seasons," would have to be "Golden Veins".  Super catchy and definitely takes a little warming up to, considering it almost sounds like a completely different lead singer, but it's totally rad and I fully give them credit for being risky and changing up their sound.  Rock on, guys!!!

AND, if that's not enough exciting news for one day, my man Justin Timberlake released the other half of his 20/20 Experience album today!!! I think for most people it might take a lotttt of warming up to; as with much of the first half of this album, Justin's tracks are on the long side, and that's not necessarily always a good thing, unfortunately.  You may find yourself wondering when the eff the song will be over, because it doesn't seem to be going anywhere... But I give JT credit for always staying relevant and for being so god damn sexy.

Best track? The final cut of the album, entitled "Not A Bad Thing".  The entire song is over 11 minutes long, but halfway through the song drastically changes from one style to another, and the second half of the track is exquisitely beautiful.  JT reverts back to his roots by serenading us in a simple style, with just his soothing voice and some acoustic guitar.  If you are looking for a song to fall asleep to, this is it, ladies.  Keep doing you, Justin.  We freaking love it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CErc7TZ7ilc

Have a WONDERFUL night, ladies and gents! I love you all, I cannot believe how blessed I am to be living this life.

The View from Dexter

Having a break between classes from 3 to 4 in the afternoon isn't such a bad thing. Especially when you get to lounge on the green grass and bask in the warm September sun on Dexter lawn for an hour. Eat some food, listen to music... Hey, I'm not complaining.

You know what else goes great with all this? The Tom Petty station on Pandora! To be blunt, I'm OBSESSED. How can you listen to those Heartbreakers, the Stones, the Beatles, and Springsteen and NOT be mellow and content with your life? That's what I thought.

So if you're a fan of classic rock, check out that channel! I know Pandora is a bit phased out, but I promise, this will be worth a listen. And if you're not a fan of classic rock, you're not a human. Because 60s and 70s rock is the absolutely shit. You better believe it, baby.

Jazzy Hump Day

HAPPY HUMP DAY!!!! (Even though it's not technically hump day anymore...)

With absolutely nothing to do on Wednesdays besides class from 6 - 8 at night, I spent a good part of my morning and afternoon today runnin' around downtown SLO on the hunt for a new job! It was somewhat exhausting, but I'm feeling confident and I'm crossing my fingers for a successful outcome.

On another note (no pun intended hee hee), tomorrow I will be auditioning to accompany the Cal Poly Jazz band(s) as a vocalist!! I am SO excited, jazz music is a somewhat hidden interest of mine; I went to every single one of the CP University Jazz Bands' concerts last year, and I highly encourage you guys to check them out this year! Even if you think you might not be into it, I guarantee you'll find your feet tapping along with the beat at the very least.

So the song I have to sing for my audition tomorrow is called "It's a Great, Great Pleasure" by Jordan Luis.  I had never heard it before until a few days ago when I began rehearsing, but it's super fun and catchy! Instantly puts you in a happy, jazzy mood.  It's a classic for sure, and has been covered/re-recorded by many jazz artists including the great BB King.

I also thought I'd share one of my favorite jazz songs: "Pennies From Heaven"  by Louis Prima.  (It's the song that's played in the movie "Elf" when Buddy is walking the streets of New York and eating old gum.) It's a dandy song, if you ever want to start your day off on a guaranteed good note, I definitely recommend this song!

Why Can't I Melt Your Cold, Cold Heart?

Greetings, everyone.  Sorry I've been M.I.A. for such a long time, I didn't realize how long it had been! I've been readjusting to life on my own these past couple weeks; I moved back to SLO to begin my second year at Cal Poly (WOOOO!!!!!).

I will be living in my sorority house this year: the Pink Palace containing 18 lovely ladies who love to be cray cray.  And who love food.  It's literally so hard for me to stay awake long enough for me to write this right now because of all the unbelievably massive amounts of utterly delicious food I consumed this fine evening. Christ.

Despite having looked forward to coming back home to SLO literally all summer long, I can't help but feel a bit lonely lately.  It still feels like there's something missing, but I have no idea what.  It's barely been three weeks, but already I feel like I've been through so much! I turned 20 (help), caught up with my friends, made some new friends, started my old job at a new location, and began my Fall quarter classes yesterday.  YIKES.

Right now I am listening to the entire Norah Jones album "Come Away With Me," which is always a good idea.  Always.  It never fails to relax me or create serenity when I'm feeling a little rough after a long or weird day.  I've been going through this thing lately where I find myself really, really wishing I had a boyfriend.  Or at least someone to tell me I'm beautiful, to make me laugh, to hold me in his arms and all the rest of that wonderful cliche shit.  As much as I tell myself I'm totally and completely happy with my girls and my life the way it is, I know me... I definitely want a man in my life.  (Come on ladies, don't pretend you don't feel the same haha)

So anyhoo, Norah seems to be both sympathizing with these feelings how wonderful a man could be, yet also managing to remind me of how many times guys have let me go.  My two favorites are "Cold, Cold Heart" and "Lonestar." While Cold, Cold Heart reflects the feeling of having a man's pain from a former flame projected onto yourself, Lonestar sounds more hopeful, and perhaps reminiscent.

Perhaps the biggest challenge when it comes to relationships is that we sometimes struggle to acknowledge the fact that at some point, we have to accept that we cannot change a person, no matter how much we convince ourselves otherwise.  Just because something worked in the past does not mean it will ever work again, and that can be an extremely hard fact to accept without wincing a little from the pain it causes.

But, the good news is, good things happen when we least expect them.  So I'll carry on and keep busy, and maybe Mr. Wonderful will sweep you off your feet in the middle of Psychology class or something totally unrealistic like that.

God, I just read that sentence. Ew. Sorry guys I'm gonna stop now.  But go listen to some Norah Jones and let her sing you to sleep, and I promise, you'll feel better in the morning.

New Artist: Terraplane Sun

Helloooo everybody!

My apologies for not posting for a whole eight days (gasp!!!), this week I found myself unexpectedly -- but wonderfully -- BUSY! Hope everyone had a fun week, and more importantly a fun weekend!

This past Friday, I got to explore the highly interesting place that is Venice Beach for the first time! I wasn't sure what to expect, but I can definitely say that Venice, also (apparently) known as the weed capital of California, definitely has everything: bongs, sunglasses, self-proclaimed "green doctors," street performers, homeless people, talented artists, muscle men, food galore, and people from literally every culture and country imaginable.  I must have heard 8 different accents and/or languages while I was there, so cool! Not to mention, I got to witness the filming of a surfing movie called Ride, starring Luke Wilson and Helen Hunt! (Yes, of course I had to have the classic 15 minutes of being starstruck.  No, unfortunately I did not get a picture with Luke. :( )

Anyway, being in Venice on Friday reminded me of a band I saw perform at a brewery this past January in San Luis Obispo, where I go to school.  The band, Terraplane Sun, opened for Shwayze during his tour along the California coast this year, and I had the unbelievable privilege to actually meet and talk with the guitarist and lead singer! Terraplane Sun originated from Venice Beach, and in my opinion, their unique and mellow sound perfectly reflects the relaxed, beachy vibe, the "California Cool," that exudes out of Southern California.

One of TS's catchiest tracks, "Get Me Golden," particularly captures the vision of taking a stroll down the boardwalk wearing hipster shades and basking in the California sunshine; it's a happy-go-lucky sort of song that puts the listener's mind at ease and creates a carefree attitude.  Frontman Ben Rothbard radiates hipster-cool, and his unique vocals are something you won't forget easily!

Terraplane Sun has become one of my favorite bands, and they are especially fun to listen to right now during summertime, or any time you're yearnin' for some Cali sunshine and the big blue Pacific.  I hope you check them out and enjoy what you find!

Check Out This Artist: Portugal. The Man

Hey y'alllll!

Yes, I am in fact posting to this blog at 8:45 on a Saturday night... No comment, I'm on vaca in beautiful Newport Beach!

Anyhoo, I just wanted to share with you real quick about a band I have loved for quite a few years now: Portugal. The Man.  They've been around for a little while, but their 7th and most recent album, Evil Friends, was just released this past June.  PTM has a funky but laid back sound, they're definitely the epitome of alternative rock.  Their songs are easy to listen to, and their lyrics are wholly original and fresh.  I highly suggest you check them out, especially if that's the kind of vibe you look for in music!

Evil Friends is fantastic, I'm newly addicted and thus listening to it on repeat.... But don't hesitate to check out their older releases! My personal favorite album is The Satanic Satanist; really great stuff on there.

Happy listening, and here's to hoping you're out having a crazy Saturday night instead of reading my blog! ;)

Blessed

Today I am feeling especially grateful, for no specific reason.  I sat outside in the sun today while house sitting for my cousins, peacefully reading a book while the dog entertained himself in the yard, and I felt perfectly content and completely blessed to just be alive and able to enjoy this beautiful place we live in.

Yes, it sounds very cheesy, but I just thought I'd share with you my moment of simple appreciation and bliss today.  And for some reason I cannot explain, Ode to LRC by Band of Horses remained stuck in my head all day after listening to it this morning while walking the dog.  I never really listened to the lyrics before, but they are truly exquisite, thoughtful, and beautiful; I think they are a good reminder to us of what is important in life.

So don't sweat the small stuff, and when you start to feel exasperated or overwhelmed in your life, take a deep breath and truly take in all the positive things that surround you, and how privileged and blessed you are.

Motivation

So about two months ago I had a lapse of judgement and decided to sign up for the Nike Women's Half Marathon in San Francisco this October.  I've always been a mediocre runner: cross country and track my freshman and sophomore years of high school, and after that, running was pretty much the only way I knew how to exercise... It's still the only way I know how to exercise.  I am NOT an athlete.

Anyhoo. I was really sick for the better part of January through June until I had my tonsils and adenoids surgically removed, so now I'm finally healthy and able to actually do physical activity! Yay!! (BOOO.) I've been trying to run every day, and push myself to go a little farther and a little faster each time.  So far my progress is laughable, but hey it's more than a lot of people are doing.

But the best part about training, actually about running in general, in my opinion, is the music you listen to while you do it! And for a music-obsessed person like me, having the absolute perfect running playlist is CRUCIAL.  Some of my faves include Can't Hold Us - Macklemore, Heart Skips A Beat - Olly Murs, and a wholeeee lotta Two Door Cinema Club because they're the tits.  But my new obsession is Pompeii by Bastille: If you haven't checked them out yet, get on it!!! Especially this song because basically when you listen to it, you can do ANYTHING. Literally. It's the king of motivational songs.

GET MOTIVATED!!!!!

US Open-Inspired Song of the Day

My friend Raychel and I at the US Open today! :)
It's that time of year again: the US Open of Surfing is here, wooo! For those of you who don't know, the Open always takes place in Huntington Beach, CA and I am beyond blessed to live a mere 15 minutes from this beautiful blue coast! (I don't care what anyone says, Orange County RULES.)

There's really not a whole lot to do at the US Open, unless you absolutely live for waiting in a line for an hour and a half just to get a cheap hat for FREE! Oh yeah, I guess you could watch the actual surf competition too. Anyway, the beach is, and always has been, my favorite place to be, so a lot of the music I listen to, especially in summertime, is inspired by the beach!

Sooo today's song of the day is "Never Let You Go" by Third Eye Blind.  It's a throwback for sure, but a classic nonetheless.  Great song for driving to the beach, lounging by the pool, or shreddin' the gnar (don't worry, I don't know what that means either).  Hope this song inspires you to find your blissful, sunny beach, wherever you may be this summer!

Anger Un-Management / Song of the Day

Isn't it funny (but actually not at all) how your day can start out wonderfully perfect and then magically turn to a big pile of horse turd? We've all been there... Today, I was there.

I have a sister two years younger than me, which means (you guessed it) we fight ALL. THE. TIME.  I don't usually lose my cool but my sister is a full-blown expert at knowing how to really freaking tick me off, so sometimes I crack under pressure.  Anyway, the whole thing blew up and my house turned into an episode of Family Feud...

...which leads us to today's Song of the Day! We all have a favorite song for when we just want to punch a wall in or drive 100 miles per hour away from where we are, or just run until the anger sweats out of us.  Mine is Anthem Part 2 by Blink-182; yes, totally cliche with the adolescent angst-y lyrics and stuff, but hey, it does the job.

Hope y'all's Sunday Funday was better than my Not-So-Fun-Day!

Song of the Day

"Until We Get There" by Lucius

I first heard this song at the end of an episode of New Girl.  I like it because it's a mellow song but also has momentum to it; fun fact: it's actually great to run to! Also a good song for in the car.  It's a simple song, but the message is good: "Everybody's gotta get there somehow".  Life moves fast and Lord knows how incredibly frustrating it can get, but in the end everyone will get where they're supposed to end up, so why not enjoy the ride on the way there?

New Artist - The 1975

On the half hour drive to my aunt's house today, a radio station I was listening to introduced a song by the artist The 1975.  They are a band from the UK, and they currently have an EP with five tracks out.  I had never heard of them until today, but I listened to all of their songs on Spotify as soon as I got home, and they're pretty good! If you're into Alternative/Indie stuff, I would definitely check them out.  Their songs are pretty catchy, and aren't overpowering or hard on the ears.

Have a listen!

Song of the Day

"Stay With You" by John Legend

I've recently been on a John Legend kick; I mean, who wouldn't love him and his seductive sexy voice? It's pure silk and melted chocolate, I could listen to that stuff all day. ANYWAY. This is a really beautiful song, it captures the soul that John Legend always masters so wonderfully in his music, as well as having truly heartfelt lyrics.  This is the kind of song women dream about having their man serenade them with.  (Maybe that's just me...? Oh well.)

Check it out!

check out my YouTube channel!

Here's the link for my YouTube channel! I've been really sick for a while so I haven't uploaded lately, but check out what I have!

http://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4xoQj5BwnBwTBVyJrA1nzw

Hello blogosphere

Hello world!

My name is Sydney, I'm almost 20, soon to be a second year at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and an absolute music fanatic.  I've been singing since I was little, and after I realized athletics weren't my forte, music and singing became my home.  It's pretty much all I know and the only thing I've ever been truly passionate and driven for in my entire life.

It's beyond cheesy and cliche for me to say this, I know, but for me music is a language.  A song is more than something you listen to in the car while you're driving to school or work, it's a channel for communicating a thought, mood, idea, or emotion.  And on some level, we all know this, right? Otherwise we wouldn't deeply relate to some songs more than others, or have our Rainy Day/Just Got Dumped/I Just Want To Cry song, or play that one song on full volume after that hottie kisses you for the first time or after we ace that super hard final.

So that's why I created this blog.  I don't have a clue what I'm doing, I don't  even know if a single person will read this, but hey, I'm going for it.  I want to post about the ways music influences me and affects me on a daily basis, how it shapes my day to day life.  I'll be giving a taste of what goes on in my extremely exciting (sarcasm) life, and how music is a way for me to channel my energy and emotions.

I also love discovering new music and new artists! So feel free to share with me about what you listen to and enjoy, or anything new that you discover too, because I'll be posting about music I'm interested in on any particular day.

Thanks guys, cheers to an interesting experiment!
